Open Outlook templates on any computer

Outlook templates are a handy way to reuse the same email, but the .oft file only works smoothly in one place: classic Outlook for Windows, where Outlook opens it as a new draft. Send the file to a colleague on a Mac and Outlook for Mac won't open it, because Mac Outlook saves templates in its own format. Attach it to an email and Gmail can't preview it. New Outlook for Windows and Outlook on the web don't open a .oft with a double-click either; depending on the account, they may only offer to import it as a mail template.

This OFT viewer reads the template directly in your browser, so anyone can see what's inside.

What the OFT viewer shows

A template is built the same way as an Outlook message, so InboxVue opens it with the parser behind the MSG viewer and labels it as a template. You get:

  • The full layout. The HTML body is shown in a sandboxed frame with its fonts, tables, colours and links, as the template's author designed it.
  • Embedded pictures. Logos and banners stored inside the template (inline cid images) render in place. Images hosted elsewhere are blocked until you press Load remote images, so opening a file doesn't alert a tracking server.
  • Attachments. Forms, PDFs and other files saved with the template can be previewed or downloaded one by one.
  • Pre-filled details. The subject and any To or Cc recipients the author stored.
  • Search. Add several templates and search their text to find the right one.
  • Private by design. Parsing happens on your device. Nothing is uploaded and no account is needed.

Turning a template into something shareable

Most people open an .oft without Outlook to share or archive it. From the Export menu you can save the template as a PDF for printing, review or sign-off; as HTML to reuse the layout on a website or in another email tool; as plain text; or as an EML file that Apple Mail and Thunderbird can open. A ZIP export bundles the message with its attachments.

Single exports are free and carry a small watermark. InboxVue Pro ($6.99 a month, $29.99 a year or $99 once) removes the watermark and adds bulk export, a CSV index and court-ready PDF tools.

Where .oft files open

App Opens .oft? Notes
InboxVue Yes Any modern browser, no upload, view and export only
Classic Outlook for Windows Yes Opens it as a new draft you can edit and send
New Outlook for Windows / Outlook on the web Not directly Some Microsoft 365 accounts can import it as a mail template
Outlook for Mac No Uses its own .emltpl template format
Gmail, Apple Mail No Shows the file as an attachment it can't preview

Have a regular Outlook email instead? Use the MSG viewer, MSG to PDF or MSG to EML. Standard .eml files open in the EML viewer and mailbox archives in the MBOX viewer. More options are in how to open MSG files without Outlook.

FAQ

What is an OFT file?
An OFT file is an Outlook template, created in Outlook for Windows with File → Save As → Outlook Template. It stores a reusable message (subject, body, formatting, images, attachments and sometimes recipients) so people can start new emails from the same layout, such as a newsletter, form letter or standard reply.
How do I open an OFT file without Outlook?
Drop it on this page. InboxVue reads the template in your browser and shows its content, images and attachments, with nothing to install and no Microsoft account. It works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari on any computer.
Can I open an OFT file on a Mac?
Not with Apple's or Microsoft's Mac apps in most cases. Outlook for Mac keeps templates in its own .emltpl format and doesn't open .oft files, and Apple Mail doesn't recognise them either. This viewer runs in Safari or Chrome on any Mac and shows the template's full content.
How do I convert an OFT file to PDF?
Open the template here, then choose Export → PDF. The PDF keeps the formatted body and the images embedded in the template. Converting a single template is free with a small watermark; InboxVue Pro removes the watermark and lets you export many files at once.
Why does my template say No sender?
Templates are saved before anyone sends them, so most OFT files don't contain a From address. Rather than invent one, InboxVue labels the sender line No sender (template). Outlook fills in the sender only when someone sends an email from the template.
Is my OFT file uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read by JavaScript running in your browser tab and never leaves your device. InboxVue has no server copy to store, read or delete. The only network requests come from remote images, and only after you press Load remote images.
What's the difference between OFT and MSG?
Both use the same Outlook file structure, which is why InboxVue reads them with the same parser. An MSG file is a single saved email, usually with a sender and a sent date. An OFT file is a template meant to be reused, so Outlook opens it as a new, unsent draft and it usually has no sender.
Can I edit the template in InboxVue?
No. InboxVue is a viewer and converter: you can read the template, save its images and attachments, and export it, but you can't change the text or send it as an email. To edit an .oft file, open it in classic Outlook for Windows, make your changes and save it as a template again.
