Read email files without the program that made them
Email files turn up in many places: an attachment from a colleague, a folder of evidence from a lawyer, a Gmail archive from Google Takeout, an old Thunderbird profile on a backup drive, or a mysterious winmail.dat that arrived instead of the attachment you were expecting. Each one normally needs a specific email program to open, and that program is often on a different operating system from yours.
InboxVue opens them all in a single browser tab. Drop a file on this page and it appears in a three-pane reader like a desktop mail app: folders or Gmail labels on the left, a fast list of messages in the middle, and the full email with its formatting, inline images and attachments on the right.
How it works
- Drop your files. Drag one or more files, or a whole folder, onto the drop zone. You can also press Choose files.
- Read and search. Messages appear as they're found. Sort by date, sender or size, and search by words or with filters such as
from:,has:attachmentorbefore:2021-01-01. - Export what you need. Save any email as a PDF, EML, plain text or HTML file, or download its attachments. InboxVue Pro exports thousands of messages at once.
Everything happens on your device. Read more on the how it works page.
One tool, every common email format
| You have | What it is | Open it with |
|---|---|---|
.eml |
A single email in the standard internet message format, used by Thunderbird, Apple Mail, Outlook on the web and many others | EML viewer |
.msg / .oft |
A single Outlook message or template in Microsoft's compound file format | MSG viewer |
.mbox |
Many emails in one file, used by Gmail's Google Takeout, Thunderbird and Apple Mail exports | MBOX viewer |
winmail.dat |
An Outlook rich-text wrapper (TNEF) that hides the real attachments | winmail.dat opener |
.emlx |
A single message as stored inside Apple Mail's library | EMLX viewer |
Need to convert rather than just read? Use EML to PDF, MSG to PDF, MBOX to PDF, EML to HTML, MSG to EML or MBOX to CSV. Each page opens the same tool, set up for that conversion.
Private by design
Most online converters ask you to upload your email to their servers, often with a 20 to 50 MB size limit. That's a poor fit for private correspondence and a dead end for a 4 GB mailbox. InboxVue takes the opposite approach: the parsing, rendering, search and PDF creation all run inside your browser, using background workers so the page stays responsive.
- Nothing to upload, so file size is limited only by your device.
- Remote images are blocked until you choose to load them, so opening an old newsletter doesn't tell its sender you read it.
- Scripts inside emails never run. Each message body is shown in an isolated, sandboxed frame.
- No account needed to view files. Sign-in exists only so InboxVue Pro works on your other devices.
Built for big archives
A Gmail export from Google Takeout can easily hold 100,000 messages in a single file of several gigabytes. InboxVue streams it: the first messages show up within seconds and the rest load while you read. Gmail labels become folders, conversations are grouped by their thread, and search covers senders, subjects and message text.
Court-ready PDF exports
Lawyers, HR teams and anyone preparing evidence can export a whole mailbox, or a filtered set of messages, to PDF with full headers, sequential Bates numbers, a cover page with a table of contents, and a SHA-256 manifest that proves the files haven't changed. See email to PDF for court.
